A 16-year-old Girl Died By Sharks In Western Australia

JAKARTA - A 16-year-old girl died from a shark attack while swimming in a river in Western Australia. The girl's body was pulled from Swan River, on the outskirts of Perth, Fremantle.

The woman from Perth was riding a jet ski with her friends in the river when the incident occurred.

Inspector Paul Robinson, of the Western Australian Police, said it was possible the girl jumped into the water to swim with the dolphins seen nearby.

He described the incident as "very, very traumatic" and the girl's family was "deeply devastated by the news", quoted by the BBC, Saturday, February 4.

Fisheries experts claim it is not uncommon to find sharks in the river, Robinson said. And this is the first fatal shark attack on the Swan River since a 13-year-old boy was killed in January 1923.

Australia typically records about 20 shark attacks each year, with most occurring in New South Wales and Western Australia.

There were two fatal shark attacks in 2021, and seven in 2020.
