Air Attack Warning Sirene Was Heard In Kyiv When EU Leaders Met President Zelensky

JAKARTA - The warning of airstrikes was heard throughout Ukraine when EU leaders were in the country's capital discussing further sanctions against Russia and President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The chief executive commission of the EU and chairman of 27 EU national leaders traveled to Kyiv as a form of support for Ukraine ahead of the year of Russia's February 24, 2022 invasion.

"There will be no giving up in our determination. We will also support you at every step of your trip to the EU," EU chairman Charles Michel wrote on Twitter on Friday morning under a photo of himself in the Kyiv central square.

There were no immediate reports of a new missile strike following the airstrike warning, reported by Channel News Asia, Friday 3 February.

Zelensky called for more punitive action against Russia by the EU. But the new sanctions that the bloc is preparing for the warning will fail to meet the demands of its government.

The West has imposed massive punitive action since Russia's invasion of Ukraine for nearly a year that has destroyed cities, killed tens of thousands of people, forced millions of people to flee their homes and rocked the global economy.

In the latest violence, Russian missiles destroyed apartments in Kramatorsk, killing at least three people and trapping others under the rubble, police said.

After arriving in the capital Kyiv by train to discuss Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union, head of the bloc's executive commission Ursula von der Leyen promised more financial, military and political assistance to Ukraine.

He also announced the establishment of an international center in The Hague to try the crime of aggression in Ukraine.

"This is a democratic fight against authoritarian regimes," von der Leyen told a joint news conference with President Zelensky.
