PADANG - Floods and landslides that occurred due to high-intensity rains from Monday (23/1) to Tuesday morning reportedly killed two people in Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra.

However, personnel in the field are still confirming this data," said the Head of the Disaster and Logistics Division of the West Sumatra BPBD Rumainur in Padang as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 24.

Floods and landslides occurred in parts of the subdistricts of Batang Anai, Ulakan Tapakis, Lubuk Alung, Nan Sabaris, Sintuak Toboh Gadang, VII Koto, V Koto, Anam Lingkuang, 2X11 Six Lingkung, and 2X11 Timber Planting.

The natural disaster that hit these sub-districts caused around 50 houses to be damaged and 1,500 houses, 50 places of worship, around seven hectares of agricultural land and around eight hectares of fish ponds submerged.

In addition, several sections of roads such as the Padang Pariaman-Agam road in Sungai Geringging District and the connecting road in Nagari Bisati were closed off by landslides.

Rumainur said the BPBD of West Sumatra Province is ready to send logistical assistance to disaster-affected areas who need it.

"Currently only Padang has asked for logistical assistance. Meanwhile other regions still have stock so they can handle it themselves. But we are ready to help," he said.

West Sumatra BPBD on Tuesday (24/1) early morning sent logistical assistance in the form of bedding, blankets, up to 19 kilograms of rendang to help residents affected by natural disasters in the city of Padang.

"We leave it to BPBD Padang for distribution," he said.

Apart from hitting parts of the Padang Pariaman and Padang areas, floods and landslides were also reported to have occurred in parts of the Agam, Mentawai and Pesisir Selatan Regencies.
