JAKARTA - The Indonesian House of Representatives has asked the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) to optimally monitor the content of television broadcasts (TV) and radio in political years. It is hoped that the public will be educated so as not to be consumed by hoaxes or fake news.

Member of Commission I DPR RI Christina Aryani asked KPI to play a maximum role in monitoring TV and radio broadcasts when entering the political year.

"The role of KPI is expected to be maximized so that broadcasting content provides coolness, healthy and dignified political education for the community, especially avoiding hoaxes, hate speech, and black campaigns," said Christina in a statement received in Jakarta, Thursday.

The election of the new Central KPI Commissioner, he said, was the right momentum because Indonesia began to enter the political year.

"Thus we hope that broadcasting supervision can be even more optimal. Not only at the center, but KPID in the regions must actively supervise," said Christina after the Fit and Feasibility Test of the Central KPI Candidates Commissioner at the Parliament Building, quoted by Antara, Thursday, January 19.

He said KPI has an important role considering the political atmosphere that is starting to warm up and not infrequently broadcast media in the country, both television and radio are often used as a means of unhealthy, educational, black campaign, and hoax political propaganda.

"This KPI must remind you from a long time ago that our broadcasting is sterile from such practices. KPI must be firm, not afraid to give a warning if it commits a violation," said Christina.

He said the challenges currently being faced by KPI include public imagery, limited budget, and monitoring of broadcasts of "platform streaming" or new media OTT (over the top) which, although not yet included as the authority of KPI, turned out to be a source of public entertainment.

"KPI needs to immediately ratify the revision of the Broadcasting Code of Conduct and Broadcast Program Standards (P3SPS) which has been delayed since 2020. This is urgent to be done," said Christina.

The selection of KPI members will be carried out using the "voting" mechanism and is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, 2022.
