JAKARTA - The South Korean military launched a new division that has a special task. Against threats from North Korean nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) held a ceremony marking the formation of the Directorate of Nuclear Management and WMD. At the same time as the basis for the launch of the expected "strategic command".

The new directorate comes from the Nuclear Response Center and WMD under the JCS Strategic Planning Directorate. It developed into a separate directorate with additional functions of information, operations, and combat strength and development, as quoted from Yonhap News, Monday, January 2.

Built on top of the directorate, the South Korean military plans to launch a strategic command -- a comprehensive entity that pioneered the entire operation against North Korea's nuclear challenges and WMDs.

The JCS said the new directorate would lead Seoul's efforts to develop a "three-axis" defense system, overseeing integrated management of capabilities in space, cyberspace, and the domain of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The three-branch system consists of Korea's Large Sanctions and Orders, an operational plan to cripple North Korea's leadership in a major conflict; Kill Chain's preliminary attack platform; and the Korean Air Defense and Missiles system.

"We will all give our best to equip it in the early stages with a stance to immediately respond to any nuclear and missile threats from the North, as well as response capabilities that could overwhelm the enemy," Major General Park Hu -soung said.
