BMKG Asks Residents Of Bintan Island To Be Alert To The Arrival Of Rob Floods

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked residents of Bintan Island (Tanjungpinang City and Bintan Regency), Riau Islands Province (Kepri) to be aware of tidal flooding.

"Please be aware of the Bintan Island area, especially for residents living in the north and east coastal areas related to the potential for tidal flooding and high waves," said BMKG forecaster Tanjungpinang Miranda Putri Permatasari, in Tanjungpinang, quoted from Antara, Saturday, December 31.

He explained that tidal flooding could occur when tidal waves were high. Currently, the sea wave height on Bintan Island reaches 2.5 meters.

According to him, people who use sea transportation modes, and also those living around coastal areas, need to be aware of the high sea waves.

"In addition, it is also necessary to watch out for people who want to vacation in visiting the area around the beach," said MIranda Putri Permatasari.

Head of the Riau Islands Regional Disaster Management Agency Muhammad Hasbi appealed to residents not to throw garbage in the sea and ditches. Drainage channels that are clogged with garbage can cause flooding.

Residents can independently clean waterways so they are not clogged.

He also appealed to residents to be aware of high tides accompanied by high sea waves. Tidal floods are caused by sea water that is higher than the road.

"A few years ago there was a tidal flood. We ask residents to be aware of it," he said.

He stated that a number of areas in Natuna and Tambelan had tidal flooding due to high tides accompanied by high sea waves. Local governments provide assistance to victims of the disaster.

"Aid from the Riau Islands Provincial Government is spread throughout the district and city so that when needed it can be directly given to the victims," said Muhammad Hasbi.
