KEPRI - Bad weather hit Bintan Regency, Riau Islands (Kepri). As a result, hundreds of floating kelong units or anchovy fishing gear belonging to local traditional fishermen were unable to operate.

Head of the Riau Islands Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service, Tengku Said Arif Fadillah, said fishermen realized that they would not be able to survive being hit by high waves and strong winds.

Therefore, according to him, fishermen have made the right decision not to go to sea using floating kelong during the north wind season.

"Extreme weather is not only in Bintan, but also in other regencies and cities in Riau Islands," he said.

The floating cages are made of wood and boards, in the form of plots. In the middle of the wooden wall there are nets to catch anchovies and squid and other types of fish.
