JAKARTA - BMKG issued early warnings to residents, tourists and users of sea transportation to be aware of wind speeds that reach 40 km/hour in Bintan Regency, Riau Islands.

BMKG forecaster Tanjungpinang City, Arifah Dwi Yuliani explained, referring to the latest weather analysis, strong winds occurred due to atmospheric dynamics around Indonesia such as the Asian monsun which showed significant activity in the last few days with the potential to be accompanied by a cool (boosting atmospheric pressure).

In addition, he said, the strong winds were caused by the phenomenon of cross-equatoral flow or "cross-equatorial northerly mission".

"The impact of the cold rush from Asia, accompanied by this trans-equator flow phenomenon, can cause indirectly wind speeds around Indonesia, including Bintan Island (Bintan and Tanjungpinang Regencies)," he said.

Arifah added that strong winds that occur in Bintan can cause high waves from usual. The height of sea waves in the waters north to east of Bintan reaches 2.5 meters.

This condition certainly endangers the safety of residents, tourists and users of sea transportation.

He reminded the public that users of ferry transportation need to increase their vigilance as an effort to adapt and mitigate these conditions.

"Creating branches and fragile tree branches and strengthening the stands of the poles so that strong winds do not blow," he said.

Previously, a student from Tanjungpinang High School was rolled up by high waves while swimming in the waters of Trikora IV Bintan. The student was found dead after a one-day search was carried out.
