JAKARTA - BMKG predicts that wave heights in the Indian Ocean south of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta on 23-24 December 2022 will reach 4-6 meters or fall into a very high category.

"Meanwhile, the wave height in the Indian Ocean south of West Java in the same period is predicted to reach 2.5-4 meters or be in the high category," said Head of the BMKG Technician Group at the Tunggul Wulung Meteorological Station in Cilacap, Teguh Wardoyo in Cilacap, Central Java, Friday, December 23.

According to him, high waves ranging from 2.5-4 meters also have the potential in the southern waters of West Java, Central Java, and DIY.

He said the increase in wave height was triggered by the dominant wind pattern moving from the southwest-northwest with speeds ranging from 8-30 knots.

In this case, he said, the wind movement pattern that tends to be in the same direction triggers an increase in sea wave height.

"Currently, the westerly wind season is also taking place, high waves to very high will often occur," he explained as quoted by Antara.

In this regard, Teguh said that his party had issued a high-wave early warning which was valid for December 23-24, 2022 and would be updated soon if there were further developments.

He appealed to all marine service users to pay attention to the high risk of waves and wind speeds for shipping safety, namely wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters at risk of fishing boats.

Furthermore, wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters are at risk of barges, wind speeds of more than 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters at risk of ferries, as well as wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters at risk for large ships such as cargo ships and cruise ships.

In addition, people who travel on the beach are advised not to swim or play with beach water because high waves can come at any time, said Teguh Wradoyo.
