Single Candidates Dominate The Vote Acquisition So Evidence That There Are Still Lazy Parties Competing

JAKARTA - All single candidate pairs in the 2020 Pilkada outperformed the votes acquired in the Vote Recapitulation Information System (Sirekap). There are 25 single candidate constituencies competing with empty columns.

Chairman of the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) Abhan said, the average vote acquisition for single candidate pairs had votes above 70 percent, and some even got votes above 90 percent.

"A single candidate dominates from all 25 districts of this city. The majority is above 70 percent. Only one area in Humbang Hasundutan Regency is competitive, namely a single candidate pair getting 52.40 percent of the votes and 47.60 percent of the empty column," Abhan said in the discussion. webinar, Thursday, December 17th.

Continuing, Member of the Perludem Advisory Council, Titi Anggaraini questioned the existence of political parties competing in a number of regional Pilkada 2020 with a single candidate pair.

Titi considered, the large number of electoral districts with a single candidate that ended up winning in their vote acquisition proved that there are still political parties that are lazy to compete with other parties to champion their candidate pairs.

"A single candidate is an anomaly and a tragedy for democracy in Indonesia. This is because single candidates occur in electoral districts with large voter numbers and multiparty systems that we adhere to," said Titi.

In this case, Abhan saw that the number of votes obtained by a single candidate was suspected because the General Election Commission (KPU) did not have clear rules regarding who could campaign for the empty column.

"So, the KPU regulations do not regulate empty column campaigns. This later needs to be clear about the single candidate campaign regulations. What is the position of the parties campaigning for the empty column," said Abhan.
