The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum is again held in Indonesia, namely in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali from December 5-6. "47 members of the AIS Forum (including Indonesia) are countries that have a large area of oceans," he explained as reported by the Elshinta Contributor, Eko Sulestyono.

According to him, this forum is very different from other multilateral meetings, because in this forum all of them promise to develop concrete cooperation on information that is of concern to island and archipelago countries.

"That is, such as adjusting and mitigating climate change, marine-based economy (blue economy), good marine plastic waste and marine management," he said.

The AIS Forum has compiled various kinds of collaborations and collaborations. The AIS Forum as a cooperation platform now consists of the majority being small and medium-sized income countries.

Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the time to unite all island and archipelagic countries to unite and rise together for recovery. In this forum, all archipelagic countries have open and innovative forums to collaborate to optimize a sustainable healthy sea.

Indonesia, continued Coordinating Minister Luhut, sees the importance of the AIS Forum as a forum to build tactical partnerships with other countries, organizations, and development actors, starting at the regional or global level actively.

He added, AIS Forum makes joint research for the development of the capacity of island and archipelago countries. This forum has also provided funding for various research activities for universities in AIS member countries. The condition is that they must work together with one or more universities or research institutions in other AIS member countries," he said.

AIS Forum also provides support in the context of preparing startups hubs which are platforms for the younger generation in AIS member countries, especially those that have attention to ocean problems. AIS Forum also creates training related to mangrove ecosystem governance (mangrove)," he continued.

He wants that the implementation of this year's AIS Forum will later be able to agree on more concrete and concrete cooperation for the benefit of island and archipelago countries.

"There are some successful AIS programs, including blocking plastic waste from entering the sea, then entrepreneurial cooperation and innovative financing for the Blue Economy," he added.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan confirmed that the government disbursed USD 5 million or approximately IDR 77.6 billion to finance the Island and Archipelagic and Island States Forum (AIS Forum) program.

"We have donated 5 million dollars for this year. In 2019 it was 1 million dollars," said Luhut when opening the fourth ministerial meeting at the AIS Forum in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali.

The funds are intended to fund the AIS Forum programs for the next five years. Then for other countries will follow and also contribute.

"Yes, they will see how much (fund contribution). So Indonesia is not just an initiative but we made it, and UNDP (the United Nations Development Program) also contributes and so on," said Luhut.

Agenda AIS Forum 2022

Present at this activity were 21 countries, 5 ministers, 60 delegates, and 2 international organizations. AIS Forum is an international organization prepared by the Indonesian government. This Indonesian initiative is a component of maritime negotiations to create Indonesia as the World Maritime Poros.

The four main plans of the AIS Forum are climate change adjustments and mitigation, blue economy development, plastic waste management at sea, and better marine management.

The AIS Forum member states are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados,men, Carbono Verde, Comoros, Cyprus, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Federal States of Micronesia, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Indonesia, Ireland, Jamaica.
