JAKARTA - Russia launched another missile strike on Monday against Ukraine, destroying houses and turning off power, and causing casualties.

Airstrike sirens surged across the country and men, women and children clustered in the capital's metro system to take cover during the latest major wave of missile attacks since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

A new missile sequence has been anticipated in Ukraine for days and it comes just as the emergency blackout will end, with previous damage being repaired. The attack sent parts of Ukraine back into freezing darkness, with temperatures now minus 5 degrees Celsius.

At least four people were killed in Russian missile attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, adding that most of the approximately 70 missiles were shot down. Energy workers are already starting to work to restore electricity supply, he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said energy facilities had been attacked in the Kyiv region of Ukraine's southwest-center and Odesa in the south, but Ukraine's energy system was still functioning.

Separately, Ukraine's air force said it had brought down more than 60 of the more than 70 missiles fired by Russia on Monday, the latest attack in weeks targeting its critical infrastructure that has cut off electricity, heat and water to many parts of the country.

"Our people are amazing," wrote Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of Ukraine's presidency, on Telegram.

After hours of warning of airstrikes ended, President Volodymyr Zelensky told Ukrainians the air defenses had "shooted down most of the missiles". Kyiv officials said nine of the 10 missiles fired at the capital had been shot down.
