JAKARTA - The President-elect of the United States (US), Joe Biden, will nominate Pete Buttigieg as US Minister of Transportation. Selection of historic Buttigieg. Apart from being gay Buttigieg, this is a historic moment where an elected president invites his former competitors to work together.

Biden added that he sees the Department of Transportation as the site of some of his administration's most ambitious plans to get back on track. Biden also expressed confidence "Mayor Pete is leading this work with focus, politeness and a bold vision."

Buttigieg launched a strong campaign in 2019 and 2020, albeit starting with very little national recognition or political experience. He won the Iowa caucus, becoming the first gay presidential candidate in American history to win a major delegation from a major party.

Although Buttigieg and Biden enjoyed friendly relations during the presidential election, Biden's campaign team put out digital advertisements mocking Buttigieg's experience as mayor. The Biden campaign team once mocked Buttigieg for revitalizing downtown South Bend.

The election of Pete Buttigieg is the momentum for the first time a president-elect has asked one of his former rivals to join his government. The experience of working in the Biden government is seen as an opportunity for Buttigieg if he wants to run for president again.

Buttigieg is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party. But Buttigieg is someone who has no clear path to a higher elected office as he continues to shift to the right in his home state of Indiana.

In his experience as mayor, Buttigieg has spearheaded a number of infrastructure projects, including a program to make city sewers "smart" as a way to prevent flooding and plans to remove a number of one-way streets in downtown South Bend in a bid to revitalize the area. Buttigieg often blames the government for failing to do anything to infrastructure. He said Trump's team was "unable to live up to its promise to pass a major infrastructure bill, and important projects across the country have stalled."

Several former mayors are also being considered for positions in the cabinet of the Biden government, including for the positions of US ambassador to the United Nations and Secretary of Commerce. Other Democrats are also being considered for the post, including former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo.
