JAKARTA - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) noted that there was an increase in local tectonic earthquakes on Mount Gede which are administratively located in three districts, namely Cianjur Regency, Sukabumi Regency, and Bogor Regency, West Java Province. Head of PVMBG Hendra Gunawan said the recording of the activity was from November 21 to 27, 2022 at 12.00 WIB. "There was an increase in local tectonic earthquakes to 1,031 times with an amplitude of 4 to 50 mm and an earthquake of 10 to 86 seconds. The earthquake occurred 13 times with a scale of II to IV MMI intensity," Hendra said in a statement quoted in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, November 28. Based on reports of volcanic activity of Mount Gede after the earthquake that rocked Cianjur, West Java, on November 21, 2022, PVMBG revealed that there was no increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes on Mount Gede. "The inner volcanic earthquake was recorded only twice with an amplitude of 21 to 45 mm and an earthquake of 5 to 8 seconds," he said. Hendra said the last eruption of Mount Gede occurred in 1957 with the characteristics of explosive eruptions in the form of gray to black thick ash. The column of ash during the eruption at that time reached three kilometers above the peak. Currently, Mount Gede's activity is at the first or normal level. The crater activity is generally in the form of gusts of thin white smoke with a height of 10 meters above the peak. Monitoring of deformation using a tiltmeter shows inflation caused by an increase in deep volcanic earthquakes on September 24, 2022, but the increase in seismicity is non-continuous. This condition continues to be monitored intensively from the Mount Gede Observation Post. So far the potential danger is the occurrence of a phreatic eruption that can occur without a significant increase in seismicity.
