JAKARTA - Pornhub removed millions of videos in an attempt to remove illegal content - days after Visa and Mastecard blocked customers from using their cards on the site.

The adult site has suspended all content not created by content partners or members of its Model Program, which offers porn stars the opportunity to sell their videos on this platform.

Before being removed on Sunday night, December 13, Pornhub hosted an estimated 13.5 million videos. That number has now dropped to 5.6 million.

Pornhub confirmed in a statement: “This means any Pornhub content comes from a verified uploader, a requirement that platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have not yet implemented.

“Leading non-profit organizations and advocacy groups acknowledge our efforts to combat illegal content to date have been quite effective.

“Over the past three years, Facebook reported 84 million instances of child sexual abuse material. During the same period, the independent third party Internet Watch Foundation reported 118 incidents on Pornhub.

"That number is still too much, which is why we are committed to taking every necessary action.

"It is clear that Pornhub is being targeted not because of our policies and the way we are compared to our peers, but because we are an adult content platform."

Last week, a New York Times report accused Pornhub of allowing child abuse videos to be posted on their website. Pornhub denies the allegations.

The website emphasizes that they employ moderators to screen every post and remove illegal material.

Pornhub later announced it would not accept posts from unknown users. They also plan to launch a more stringent verification process in the new year.

However, on Friday, December 11, Visa and MasterCard confirmed that customers will not be able to use their credit cards to make purchases on Pornhub.

Pornhub described the decision as "very disappointing", adding in a statement: "This news is very touching for the hundreds of thousands of models who rely on our platform for their livelihoods."
