JAKARTA - BMKG noted that as of 07.00 WIB there were 161 aftershocks from the main M5.6 earthquake in Cianjur Regency, West Java.

"The number of aftershocks until November 23, 2022 at 07.00 WIB was 161 aftershocks," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, confirmed in Jakarta, Wednesday, November 23, as reported by Antara.

He added that there had been no aftershocks since 05.24 WIB. The magnitude of the largest aftershock was recorded at M4.2 and the smallest at M1.2.

"Frequence of aftershocks per six-hour period is increasingly rare. Hopefully it will be safe to return soon," he said.

He said, based on the analysis of the source mechanism, the earthquake in Cianjur, West Java had a sliding fault to the left.

"This is similar to the characteristics of the Cimandiri fault, so this is suspected to be a fault or a Cimandiri fault, and that's true because it is in the fault system zone," said Daryono.
