JAKARTA - The Chinese government was again shocked by cases of death due to COVID-19 infection when the country with the most population in the world is tightening its zero-case policy dynamically.
China's National Health Commission (NHC) reported one death case. The death, which occurred on Saturday, November 19, was the first death case in seven months.
The NHC did not mention in detail, but it is suspected that the death case befell an elderly person in Beijing. It has been the past two weeks that the COVID-19 anti-pandemic health protocol in Beijing has been tightened.
Local authorities reminded residents of the capital not to leave the house, except for urgent matters. Food stalls, restaurants, cafes, and other crowded centers in Beijing, particularly in Chaoyang District, which are mostly inhabited by foreigners are closed.
"With the increase in deaths, the number of deaths from COVID-19 in China since 2020 until now is 5,227 cases," the NHC in Beijing was quoted as saying via Antara, Sunday, November 20.
The NHC also mentioned that in China on Saturday there were 2,204 new locally transmitted cases and 22,011 asymptomatic cases.
Apart from Beijing, the most severe last spike in cases also occurred in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
During the tightening of the COVID-19 anti-pandemic prokes since last month, at least three cases of indirect death in China have occurred due to delays in medical treatment such as experienced by two toddlers and the other is for parents who commit suicide at home who are in lockdown.
