JAKARTA - A number of French intelligence agents were arrested in connection with protests in Iran, as anti-government protests continued, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi told state TV Wednesday.

Iran accused Western enemies of sparking national protests sparked by the death of Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini (22) on September 16, while in an intermediate moral police custody deemed to be dress-up not in accordance with the provisions.

"People from other countries were arrested in the riots, some of which played a major role. There are elements from the French intelligence agency and they will be prosecuted," Vahidi said.

The French Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last weekend, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said a total of seven French nationals were detained in Iran, with the latest being two people detained by Iran.

"We are worried about two other residents and from our latest investigation the results of them being detained," Catherine Colonna told the Le Parisien newspaper in an interview last Saturday.

On Friday, the Le suit newspaper reported that the two nationals had been arrested before the start of anti-government protests in September.

Relations between France and Iran have deteriorated in recent months, as efforts to revive nuclear talks, in which France is one side, have stalled.

"If the goal (Iran) is to blackmail us, then this is the wrong way to deal with France," Colonna said.

It is known that about 341 demonstrators died in riots and more than 15,800 were detained, according to the HRANA activist news agency.

The European Union on Monday imposed additional sanctions on Iran, targeting 29 individuals and three organizations, in response to what it condemned as Tehran's widespread use of force against peaceful protesters.
