BANTEN - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to the people of the southern coast of Banten to be aware of the potential for a tsunami with a height of up to 30 meters.
"We ask residents of the southern coast of Banten to remain vigilant, but not panic excessively," said BMKG Coordinator for Data and Information at Serang Tarjono Class I Maritime Meteorology Station in Serang, quoted from Antara, Friday, November 4.
According to him, actually the southern coast of Banten has the potential for a tsunami, not a new thing based on the results of a scientific study that was revealed by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), BMKG and other agencies.
The potential for tsunami waves up to 30 meters, where in the southern sea of Java there is a meeting of Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. The two plates in the southern sea of Banten often have tectonic earthquakes below magnitude 5.
Therefore, the people of the southern coast of Lebak and Pandeglang Regencies, Banten, should always be aware of the potential for tsunami waves.
"We ask residents if there is a terrible earthquake, they immediately evacuate independently to high places that are safe and do not wait for sirens," he explained.
He said that based on the results of a study on the potential for tsunami waves with earthquakes of magnitude above 7 with a depth of less than 60 kilometers.
The people of the southern coast of Banten must evacuate independently in case of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7, because of the potential for a tsunami.
To reduce the risk of a tsunami disaster and not cause many casualties or material damage, he said, his party carried out socialization and education activities to the people of the southern coast of Banten.
The activity aims to ensure that coastal communities can anticipate when earthquakes and tsunamis occur by independently evacuating to high places and safe locations without waiting for sirens.
BMKG also carried out "Goes to School" activities as well as the Earthquake Lapang School (SLG) to provide knowledge to students and the public how to save themselves in the event of an earthquake and tsunami.
In addition, BMKG has installed three sirens on the southern coast of Banten, including Labuan Beach, Pasauran and Panimbang.
However, BMKG invites private companies in the south of Banten to install sirens independently.
This is because the Labuan PLTU with the Banten Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has installed a siren and can be connected to coastal communities.
The key to the siren operator is held by the Banten BPBD and if a powerful earthquake occurs, it will sound up to a radius of 5 kilometers.
"We hope that private companies can install sirens on the southern coast of Banten," he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Lebak Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Febby Rizky Pratama mapped the evacuation route on the south coast to rescue residents in the event of a tsunami wave.
The Lebak BPBD maps evacuation routes on the southern coast covering six sub-districts, namely Wanasalam, Malingping, Cihara, Panggarangan, Bayah and Cilograng sub-districts.
"We mapped 120 points in the six sub-districts so that residents can use the route to save lives in the event of a tsunami disaster," he said.
