JAKARTA - The panel of judges at the Cibadak District Court (PN), Sukabumi sentenced two couriers of methamphetamine worth Rp. 29 billion with a sentence of 20 years in prison. Responding to the verdict, the two defendants did not file an appeal.

"We received a decision from the panel of judges at the Cibadak District Court who sentenced our clients, namely Yodi Hardiansyah (23) and Yusuf Supriatna (34) regarding the case of possession and distribution of crystal methamphetamine weighing 24.5 kg," said the attorney for the two defendants, M Tahsin Roy in Sukabumi, West Java, Friday, November 4.

He said the judge's verdict against Yodi and Yusuf was much lighter than the demands of the Public Prosecutor (JPU) of the Sukabumi District Attorney's Office, namely life imprisonment.

Tahsin admitted that the verdict given by the judge was correct even though both of his clients wanted to file an appeal.

On the other hand, the Public Prosecutor is also still considering whether the judge's decision is appropriate or not. Tahsin admitted that he was ready if the prosecutor filed an appeal.

According to him, the two clients were victims of the methamphetamine dealer. Although he had several transactions and participated in distributing the methamphetamine, said Tahsin, all of this was on the orders of the big dealer who supplied Yodi and Yusuf. He said that his client could be said to be victims, because both of them came from poor families, so it was impossible to own these illicit goods. Moreover, he continued, the value was up to billions of rupiah. Therefore, Tahsin said that the two defendants' legal team assessed that the judge's decision was observant in seeing this case. "Both of them were victims of drug dealers' crimes. In this case Yusuf was first arrested in the Caringin Village area, Cicurug District, Sukabumi Regency with evidence of one suitcase containing 31 packages of crystal methamphetamine weighing 24.5 kg, then Yodi was arrested in the Bogor area without evidence, only before he had participated in the transaction," he said. Previously, Yodi and Yusuf were sentenced to imprisonment for 20 years and a fine of Rp1 billion. With the provision, if not paid, it will be replaced with imprisonment for one year.

The decision was handed down by the panel of judges at the Cibadak District Court chaired by Agustinus and two judges from Yudistira Alfian and R Eka P Cahyo on Wednesday, November 2. In the verdict, the judge stated that the two defendants were legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing criminal acts without rights and against the law of conspiracy to become intermediaries in the sale and purchase of narcotics class I, not plants weighing more than five grams.

As in the first alternative indictment, the public prosecutor sentenced the defendant to a sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 1 billion provided that if the fine was not paid, it was replaced with imprisonment for one year. Yusuf and Yodi were arrested by the Narcotics Unit of the Sukabumi Police in the Caringin Village area, Cicurug District, Sukabumi Regency on April 7, 2022 because they were caught storing 24.5 kg of crystal methamphetamine or Rp. 29 billion. In this case, the police are still hunting for one other person who is still at large.
