JAKARTA - South Korea proved its remarks in response to North Korean missiles that landed near its territory, when three Ginseng Country fighter jets opened fire in the North Sea.

A North Korean ballistic missile landed less than 60 kilometers off the coast of South Korea on Wednesday, for the first time.

The missile landed outside South Korean territorial waters, but south of the Northern Border Line (NLL), the disputed inter-Korean maritime border in what South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called an "effective territorial increase."

South Korean warplanes fired three air-to-ground missiles into the north sea across NLL in response, South Korea's military said.

The launch of South Korea came after President Yoon's office promised a "fast and decisive response" so North Korea "payed prices for provocation".

The Pyonyangan missile, which landed near its territory, is one of three short-range ballistic missiles fired from North Korea's coastal area of Wonsan into the sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

JCS later said 10 missiles of various types had been fired from North Korea's east and west coasts. JCS said at least one missile landed 26 kilometers south of NLL, 57 kilometers from South Korea's Sokcho City, on the east coast, and 167 kilometers from Ulleung Island, where air strikes were issued.

The launch comes just hours after Pyongyang demanded that the United States and South Korea stop large-scale military exercises, saying "military sparks and provocations could no longer be tolerated."

Separately, North Korea has said that a series of recent launches were in response to allied exercises.

Pak Jong Chon, secretary of the Central Committee of North Korea's ruling Labor Party said in a statement on Wednesday that the number of warplanes involved in the exercise titled 'Vigilant Storm' proved it "aggressive and provocative" and specifically targeted North Korea.

He said the name of the exercise even imitated the United States' Operation Desert Storm against Iraq in the 1990s.

"The overstep of enemy forces for military confrontation has created a serious situation on the Korean peninsula," Pak said in a statement broadcast by state news agency KCNA.
