Legal Experts Support The Death Penalty For Covid-19 Social Assistance Corruptors

JAKARTA - Legal expert from Airlangga University (Unair) Surabaya, I Wayan Titib Sulaksana, supports the implementation of the death penalty for corruptors of the COVID-19 social assistance funds (bansos). Wayan admitted that he was sad to find the news of corruption by the Minister of Social Affairs (Mensos) Juliari Batubara.

"I am very sad to read the news. There are still very, very many Indonesians who are economically affected by COVID-19, which have not been met with social assistance, direct cash assistance and other government assistance," he said, written by Antara, Sunday, December 6.

So, the fairest criminal sanction for corrupt state officials is capital punishment. Not without reason. There are references to articles that can be used, namely Article 2 paragraph 2 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning Corruption which was updated by Law Number 20 of 2002.

Furthermore, Wayan highlighted the work of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Wayan said, the actions of the KPK in the last few weeks did not mean that the revision of the KPK Law was not weakening.

But now is the time for the KPK to show good, correct, serious and earnest performance in prosecuting and eradicating Corruption.

"This is just the first step from a good start. Although evidence of other actions is still needed to gain the trust of the Indonesian people, this Antirasuah Institution has declined," he said.

The KPK named Juliari Batubara as a suspect in the alleged corruption of receiving something by state officials or who represented him at the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs. Corruption is related to social assistance for the Jabodetabek 2020 area.
