JAKARTA - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin hopes that Indonesia, especially Jakarta, can become the Muslim fashion capital in the world to promote Indonesian fashion products.

"'Fashion capitals in the world are New York, London, Paris, and Milan. I don't think it's too much if we aspire to make Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia the world's 'Muslim Fashion Capital'," said Vice President Ma'ruf Amin at the opening of Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week (JMFW) 2023 in Tangerang on Thursday, October 20.

According to the Vice President, to advance the Indonesian Muslim fashion industry is working with the government, employers, designers, celebrities, including athletes who can participate in promoting hijab fashion products in international sports events.

"Of course we are proud to use our own nation's wealth in our fashion products. Let's use the Nusantara fashion which is diverse from all provinces so that our fabrics are more global and will also protect our cultural wealth so that it does not become extinct and is not easily claimed by other nations," said the Vice President as quoted by Antara.

All assets owned, according to the Vice President, must be optimized to advance the world of Indonesian Muslim fashion which demands creativity, innovation, collaboration, and strategies based on research and knowledge.

"The Muslim fashion business is a living business, of great value, has bright prospects. That is why this business is increasingly attracting the attention of many countries, even countries with very few Muslim populations," added the Vice President.

According to the Vice President, in the 2016-2017 period, global Muslim women's spending on fashion reached 44 billion US dollars, while in 2024 global Muslim consumer fashion spending was estimated at 311 billion US dollars.

Especially domestically, the Muslim fashion industry also shows happy development, namely in 2021 the Muslim fashion industry grew 18.2 percent with total consumption reaching IDR 300 trillion. Meanwhile, Muslim fashion exports increased 12.5 percent, reaching 4.6 billion US dollars in the same period.

"Recognizing the opportunities and potentials that we have as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, it is only natural that we have a vision to become a center for global Muslim fashion. Moreover, the world's Muslim population will continue to grow. By 2030, 26 percent of the earth's population is thought to be Muslim," said the Vice President.

The Vice President hopes that the implementation of Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week will increase awareness of the great potential of the Muslim fashion business, so that all stakeholders are increasingly concerned about advancing this industry.

"I also hope that the use of Muslim clothing for domestic products will be more widespread, especially products from MSMEs. To the Ministry of Trade, I entrust it to intensify the promotion of Indonesian Muslim fashion products, including sports fashion. I also entrust this message to our representative offices abroad," added the Vice President.

Finally, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin advised to be at the forefront of promotion of Muslim fashion digitally, for the sake of other countries that are interested and do research in the field of Muslim fashion, they can get more information about the Muslim fashion industry in Indonesia.
