JAKARTA - The Banjarmasin City DPRD highlighted the problem of meeting the needs of proper latrines when they visited a number of areas during the recess period.
"This is a problem that we got during a recess with the people of Karang Mekar Village, East Banjarmasin," said Banjarmasin City DPRD Chairman H Harry Wijaya in Banjarmasin, Thursday, October 13, as reported by Antara.
From the report from the Karang Mekar Village apparatus, it was stated that 216 houses in the urban village did not have proper latrines.
"This is only one kelurahan. There are 52 urban villages in this city whose residents live on the riverbanks, their sanitation facilities must be paid close attention, especially regarding the proper toilet facilities for residents and fulfilling good waste management," he said.
The Banjarmasin City DPRD asked the Banjarmasin City Government to address the sanitation problem by seeking assistance in providing healthy latrines for residents.
"So that no more latrines or toilets of residents immediately fall into the river," said Harry.
Banjarmasin City DPRD member Noorlatifah also said that the sanitation problem in Karang Mekar Village must be addressed immediately.
"As soon as possible, it must be handled, it cannot be done through the APBD, it can be pursued through CSR and others," he said.
"This will be our attention also on the council to discuss with the city government," he added.
Karang Mekar Village Head Padeli Rakhman said that there are still many residents who do not have healthy latrines in their area.
"Most of the houses on the riverbanks are there, but the toilets fall directly into the river," he said.
He said that most of the houses of residents who do not have healthy latrines are on the edge of the river, the green lane.
"There is already a public toilet manufacturing program in our area. Maybe like this later (the method used to provide healthy latrines) in areas with many residents' houses that do not yet have these proper toilets," he said.
