WAMENA - The management of the University of Cenderawasih (Uncen) Papua is optimistic that it can open a branch of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) in the new province, Papua Mountains, as the people and the government hope.

Deputy Chancellor of Uncen for Cooperation IV, Fredrik Sokoy, said that there needs to be consolidation first with the Jayawijaya Regency Government in Papua Mountains.

"Regarding the request (from the Jayawijaya Regency Government) to open the Uncen Faculty of Medicine, we will consolidate it because it might be only a matter of period. The period in the right time means we can do that," he said, quoted by Antara, Sunday, September 25.

The government and the Papuan people of the Mountains, he said, could only be realized after the management of this university corrected the education system there to make it better.

One of them is related to many Uncen's Faculty of Medicine students who have followed theory but have not practiced it.

"Kalau itu (praktik atau koas) sudah dilakukan maka jumlah mahasiswa akan berkurang. Lalu dengan kekosongan ini akan mempermudahkan kita untuk membuka wing. Jadi mungkin pertimbangan perioda saja atau waktu yang tepat kita dapat melakukan," katanya.

He said he did not rule out the possibility of opening other faculties such as the Faculty of Engineering, which has been carried out by Biak Numfor Regency, because Uncen has a commitment to be more popular with the regions.

"This is one of the tasks that we need to oversee because we cannot allow the regional needs," said Fredrik Sokoy.

Previously, the Regent of Jayawijaya, Jhon Richard Banua, admitted that he had asked Uncen to open a branch of the Faculty of Medicine in the Papua Mountains because medical personnel were needed in serving the community.
