JAKARTA - President of the United States (US) Donald Trump announced the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine will begin as early as next week. There are several brands of vaccines that are 90 percent effective or more that are ready for use.
"The whole world is suffering and we are turning a curve," Trump said. "And the vaccine will be delivered next week or next week."
The announcement came as Trump delivered a special Thanksgiving message to US troops overseas via teleconference. Trump noted that frontline workers, medical personnel and the elderly will be the first recipients of the vaccine.
Trump also argued that his opponent, US president-elect Joe Biden, should not be credited with the vaccine, which he described as a "medical miracle." Trump then returned to discussing fraud in the 2020 US Presidential Election.
"Joe Biden failed with swine flu, H1N1, failed miserably with swine flu," Trump said. "Don't let him take credit for the vaccine because the vaccine is me and I push people harder than they ever pushed before and we got that approval and nobody's ever seen anything like it."
Trump's comments come ahead of a December 10 meeting, at which regulators at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will review Pfizer's request for an emergency use authorization for its vaccine developed with BioNTech.
The most recent trial data for the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines, which were launched in early November, show 95 percent effectiveness. Pfizer plans to produce 50 million doses of vaccine by 2020 and 1.3 billion doses by 2021.
If the FDA approves the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use it will likely first become available to frontline health care workers and the elderly, later this year.
EffectivenessApart from Pzifer, Moderna said the vaccine was 94.5 percent effective in preventing COVID-19. Moderna, part of the Operation Warp Speed program, hopes to produce about 20 million doses of vaccine for the US by 2020, millions of which have already been made and ready to be shipped if it receives FDA authorization.
AstraZeneca also reported preliminary results showing the efficacy of the vaccine in the range of 62 percent to 90 percent, depending on the number of doses given.

Vaccines cannot be approved soon enough, but the situation is still precarious due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the US across the country today. The US is in the first place with the highest cases of COVID-19, recording more than 13 million cases currently and 1.4 million more of them have died.
Other countries such as China and Russia have started vaccinating. Russia licensed the COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, for domestic use in August before releasing data from a large-scale trial. It said November 11 that the vaccine was 92 percent effective based on its large trial.
