JAKARTA - British health officials confirmed that a new variant of monkeypox had been discovered in the UK. The UK's Health Safety Agency (UKHSA), Thursday, September 1, said that someone who had recently traveled to West Africa was diagnosed with a different variant of monkeypox currently spreading in the UK.

The patient, whose identity is still kept secret, is now in the High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) unit at Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The UK health agency said no other cases were found on Thursday and contact tracing is still ongoing.

UKHSA incident director Sophia Makak said, "We are trying to contact people who have been in contact with the case before confirming whether or not there is transmission, to evaluate them as needed and to provide direction."

According to him, the risk of transmitting monkeypox to the community is still "very small" thanks to infection control procedures.
