JAKARTA - Two workers at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) were arrested on Wednesday for leaking sensitive information to the Ukrainian side, the Russian National Guard said.

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located in Ukraine. However, after the invasion of Moscow on February 24, the plant was occupied by Russian troops in March.

The National Guard said the two workers were arrested for carrying out illegal acts and threatening the safety of the plant, transmitting information to the Ukrainian armed forces about the location of Russian military personnel and equipment at the plant.

Apart from the two workers, Russia also detained another worker it said violated factory access procedures. Judging him as an accomplice of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, for sending the coordinates of the movement of the column of Russian equipment."

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding the detentions carried out by the Russian National Guard.

Earlier, two other plant workers, an engineer and a guard, were also detained by Russia, according to Moscow-appointed Zaporizhzhia official Vladimir Rogov.

It is said, both have been detained on August 17 last. They were charged with helping Ukrainian forces to target the attack on the plant.

It is known, Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of the shooting that occurred in the area of the plant, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.

A Ukrainian technician at the plant told Reuters last week staff were working under immense pressure, with heavily armed Russian troops patrolling all parts of the site, but staying put to ensure there was no repeat of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Separately, the United Nations has called for the implementation of a demilitarized zone in the generating area, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is trying to gain access to it.
