JEMBER - The Jember Police arrested 15 people suspected of setting fire to two hamlets in Baban Timur Hamlet, Mulyorejo Village, Jember Regency, East Java.

"We have arrested 15 rioters in the Padukuhan Statuerejo and Dampikrejo, Baban Timur Hamlet, Mulyorejo Village, Silo District. All of them were taken to the Jember Police Headquarters," said Jember Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hery Purnomo as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, August 6.

According to him, the quick action and hard work of the Jember Police in conducting an investigation to uncover the arson and looting experienced by residents in Baban Timur Hamlet finally paid off.

"Dozens of perpetrators who were arrested are all residents of Banyuanyar Village, Kalibaru District, Banyuwangi Regency, but only one person is from Sampang Regency, Madura," he said.

He explained that the motives of the perpetrators for burning and looting in Padukuhan Statuerejo and Dampikrejo were out of anger over the persecution carried out by one of the local residents, Ali, causing the victim named Suhar and three of his friends on July 3, 2022.

"Even from the abuse carried out by Ali, one of the residents of Mulyorejo Village, the victim Suhar suffered a stab wound to his head, but the perpetrator after persecuting the victim was immediately secured by the Sempolan Police," he said.

Hery said the victim's family or one of the victim's children did not accept the incident of abuse experienced by his father, even though the perpetrator had been detained by the police.

"One of the victim's children then contacted JN to take revenge, so the person concerned immediately contacted him to mobilize his members to destroy and burn the house," he said.

Based on police data, the arson occurred in six different locations during the two July-August 2022, causing four houses to be damaged, three cars damaged, and 19 two-wheeled vehicles.
