JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said it has used the updated season zone or ZOM9120 so that the accuracy of forecasting the rainy season for the 2022-2023 period will be more precise and accurate.

Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said ZOM9120 was the result of updating the season zone based on normal rainfall for the 1991-2020 period. Previously BMKG was based on the average climate conditions in 1981-2010.

"God willing, the data and information produced by the BMKG will be more reliable, more precise, and more accurate," Dwikorita said in a written statement, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, August 3.

Dwikorita explained that the updated seasonal zoning was carried out based on the combination of in situ observation data on the earth's surface and satellite-based data so that it was expected to be more spatially and temporally acceptable.

The updated seasonal zoning is also expected to reflect more specific climate characteristics in each region and can be used as a basis for climate information for the next 10 years.

After updating the season zones, there are additional season zones throughout Indonesia from 407 zones to 699 zones.

The season zone which originally included 342 ZOM and 65 Non-ZOM) was increased to 583 ZOM with two or more seasons and 116 ZOM with one season (formerly called Non-ZOM).

ZOM9120 includes 156 ZOM in Sumatra, 193 ZOM in Java, 67 ZOM in Kalimantan, 20 ZOM in Bali, 27 ZOM in West Nusa Tenggara, 28 ZOM in East Nusa Tenggara, 104 ZOM in Sulawesi, 40 ZOM in Maluku, and 64 ZOM in Papuans.

Dwikorita said the accuracy of BMKG climate data and information is very important because it becomes a reference and policy base for many sectors, including transportation, infrastructure, agriculture and forestry, marine and fisheries, spatial planning, health, tourism, defense and security, and disaster management.
