Disbud DKI Jakarta Still Discussing Continuation Of Changing Street Names

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Culture Service is still discussing the continuation of changing street names after previously changing 22 street names in the capital city.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Culture Service (Kadisbud), Iwan Henry Wardhana, said that for the next period, his party will follow the previous pattern, namely using the names of prominent figures, especially Betawi and national figures.

"We, from the Culture Office, are just following directions from the Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan regarding the change of street names, such as 22 street names which are based on characterizations, especially national figures," said Iwan at the Jakarta City Hall as reported by ANTARA, Monday, July 18.

Iwan said that changing street names was unavoidable, especially for roads with long distances.

"As the development of the city is also getting wider, we can imagine that Jalan Daan Mogot to Citraland is so long that it doesn't eliminate Daan Mogot, but maybe there are other big street names in that location," he said.

According to Iwan, the addition of the names of other road sections will continue to develop. His party is currently working on the names of figures in the Indonesian struggle for independence.

As for the criteria, continued Iwan, what is clear is that they must be in tune with and have a theme with the characters who have become street names. The discussion will involve historians and people who have capacity in this field.

"We are currently working on leaders of the Indonesian struggle for movement, national figures, and also some heroes to avoid things that don't fit," he said.

"Like the name Menteng, we think it would be better to replace the fruit with figures that we glorify in accordance with Jakarta's goal of becoming a world city and this is also a lesson that the public must know about these names," he said.
