JAKARTA - Russian armed forces have destroyed two advanced US-made HIMARS rocket systems and their ammunition depot in eastern Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
The ministry said Russia had destroyed two launchers for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), which the United States and its allies were supplying to Kyiv.
It also said Russian troops destroyed two ammunition depots storing rockets for HIMARS near the front line, in a village south of Kramatorsk in Ukraine's Donetsk region.
It is known, the Donetsk region itself is currently the main focus of Russian troops, after successfully conquering Lugansk last week. Together, Lugansk and Donetsk make up the Donbas region.
Russia's Defense Ministry released video footage it said showed the attack. Reuters could not independently verify the attack.
It is known that Ukraine received four HIMARS systems in early July, the European Council on Foreign Relations said in a report. Meanwhile, the US has pledged to deliver eight by mid-July.
Western arms supplies are critical to Ukraine's efforts to push back the tens of thousands of Russian troops Moscow sent to its pro-Western neighbor on February 24 in what it called a "special military operation."
As previously reported, the United States has been aggressively pouring military aid to Ukraine. Most recently, at the end of last month they announced plans to provide military assistance to Ukraine, the value this time reaching 450 million US dollars or around Rp. 6,690,375,000,000, including the addition of a long-range rocket system.
In a statement, the Pentagon said the package included four additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 18 coastal and river patrol boats and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, President Joe Biden's administration has provided Ukraine with US$6.1 billion or around Rp. 90,691,750 million in security assistance.
