JAKARTA - A middle-aged woman with the initials P has been arrested by the Aceh Regional Police's General Criminal Investigation Directorate for alleged involvement in the smuggling of illegal immigrants from the Rohingya ethnicity.
Director of the General Criminal Investigation of the Aceh Regional Police, Kombes Sony Sanjaya, said that the middle-aged woman was a citizen of North Sumatra.
"The middle-aged woman was arrested when she was about to pick up three Rohingya women from a shelter in Lhokseumawe," said Kombes Sony Sanjaya in Banda Aceh, as reported by Antara, Tuesday, November 3.
Hundreds of ethnic Rohingya immigrants from Myanmar were accommodated at the Lhokseumawe Training Center (BLK) Building. They arrived in Aceh in two waves. First in June 2020 with 99 people and secondly 297 people in September 2020.
Accompanied by the Head of the Public Relations Division of the Aceh Regional Police, Kombes Ery Apriyono, the Director of General Criminal Investigation, said the perpetrator P was an ethnic Rohingya messenger who had arrived in Aceh since 2010.
"This person has been accommodated at the expense of an international migrant agency in Medan, North Sumatra. P was ordered to pick up three Rohingya ethnic immigrants at BLK Lhokseumawe," he said.
The middle-aged police officer said that the middle-aged woman was not related to the four suspected illegal Rohingya immigrants who were handled by the Aceh Regional Police.
"Between P and the other four suspects are not related, even though they are both suspected of being involved in the smuggling of illegal Rohingya immigrants," he said.
