COVID-19 Drags The European Union To The Brink Of Health System Chaos

JAKARTA - The European Union claims to be overwhelmed by the increasing number of COVID-19 transmission. This was immediately revealed by the Head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. According to him, if the European Union does not act quickly on the pandemic, the EU health care system will be disrupted.

"The spread of the virus will overwhelm our health care system if we don't act immediately," he said, quoted by CNA, Friday, October 30.

Ursula added that currently the European Commission has provided 220 euros or around Rp. 3 trillion to finance COVID-19 patients in all European Union countries. These funds are deliberately disbursed to support the health systems of countries that are members of the European Union.

To support swift action, the European Commission will also carry out more antigen tests. All this was done because the development of the spread of COVID-19 was quite high, namely 44.7 million cases with around 1.17 million deaths.

Scientists previously said on Thursday that the strain of COVID-19 that emerged in Spain since July has spread throughout Europe. The coronavirus variant was initially identified among agricultural workers in the Aragon and Catalonia regions of eastern Spain.

Meanwhile, in the last two months, that variant has accounted for nearly 90 percent of new infections in Spain. It is noted that the tension in facing the virus has spread across European borders, both to Switzerland, Ireland and the UK.
