JAKARTA - Britain's defense intelligence agency believes Russia's momentum in the war in Ukraine will slow in the next few months as its army runs out of resources, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

In comments released Wednesday by Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung, PM Johnson said President Vladimir Putin's troops were pushing forward in the eastern Donbas region, wreaking havoc but at great cost in soldiers and weapons.

"Our defense intelligence service believes, however, that in the next few months, Russia may reach a point where there is no longer any forward momentum, having exhausted its resources," PM Johnson was quoted as saying in the interview.

"Then we have to help Ukraine to reverse the dynamics. I will debate this at the Group of Seven summit (in Germany at the weekend)."

"As much as Ukraine is in a position to launch a counter-attack, it has to be supported. With the equipment they have asked of us," said PM Johnson.

Asked what victory would look like for Ukraine, or failure for President Putin, PM Johnson said:

"That we at least regain the status quo that existed before February 24 and that its (Russian) troops are pushed back from the areas they invaded," he said.

It is known, the main battlefield in Ukraine has moved to the eastern region, Donbas, with heavy fighting in Sievierodonetsk. This was done after Russia failed to control the Kyiv region and was pushed back.
