SURABAYA - Livestock in East Java have begun to be injected with vaccines to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD) ahead of Eid al-Adha. Of the 3 million vaccines in Indonesia, the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) allocates 1.5 million doses of vaccine for livestock in East Java.

"The vaccine sent to East Java is still minimal, namely 1,000 doses and only 200 injections have been used. In one opening the vaccine bottle is capable of injecting 100 cows and must be injected. Currently the priority is for dairy cows," said East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa while monitoring the distribution injection of PMK vaccine into livestock in Taman Sidoarjo District, Friday, June 17.

Khofifah said, from a quota of 1.5 million doses for East Java, as many as 1,000 doses of them had entered East Java on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. The next step was directly distributed to Kab. Sidoarjo as many as 200 doses and Pasuruan as many as 800 doses.

"The administration of the PMK vaccine to cows requires three vaccines. After the first stage is injected, the second stage is carried out after four or six weeks of giving the first dose of vaccine. Meanwhile, the third stage will be given after six months of the second vaccine," he said.

Khofifah emphasized that the priority for injecting this vaccination is for dairy cows considering the very limited stock. For this reason, it is hoped that the local vaccine from Pusvetma will be completed by the end of July or early August.

"In our opinion, the need for vaccines is very urgent. Because the transmission of FMD transmission is very fast. Therefore, we hope that there will be an acceleration of vaccine supply from the central government while waiting for local vaccines from Pusvetma," he said.

Khofifah emphasized that the management of PMK requires strong synergy. The same is true when dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, both vertically and horizontally.

Khofifah said that the treatment for PMK is similar to the handling of COVID-19. Then the process of spreading through this airbone makes the spread of the FMD virus faster. Therefore, when the distance is strong, the transmission can reach kilometers.

So, according to Khofifah, the best step in preventing transmission is to protect and isolate. Protection is not carried out in the affected areas only, but also in areas where livestock are still healthy. "So those who are healthy, please be careful not to go out to stay healthy," he said.

Based on data from Disnak Prov. East Java, the number of vaccines that are expected to enter East Java as much as 1.5 million doses will be prioritized for all beef cattle and dairy cattle.
