KPAI Criticizes Teachers For Offending SARA In The Election Of The Head Of The SMA Student Council

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) criticized a teacher at SMA Negeri 58 East Jakarta for issuing a statement of discrimination that touched on the elements of ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA) in the election of the student council president.

KPAI Commissioner for Education, Retno Listyarti said, a teacher should not lead his students not to elect candidates for student council president who have a different religion.

"Of course it is not true that teachers discriminate like that. Teachers must strengthen diversity," said Retno in a short message to VOI, Tuesday, October 27.

Regarding this case, Retno said that his party would ask for clarification from the DKI Jakarta Education Agency. "I will ask the Education Office for clarification," he said.

Separately, the Head of the East Jakarta Region II Education Sub-Department, Gunas Mahdianto, said that the teacher who said the SARA statement had been sanctioned by the Principal of SMA Negeri 58 Jakarta.

"The case has been resolved and given guidance by the principal. The teacher is also carried out by BAP (examination report) in accordance with the rules of civil servants. It has been reported to the Education Office as well," said Gunas.

As is known, a screenshot in the WhatsApp application containing SARA tones is circulating on social media. In a group called "Rohis 58", a religion teacher at SMA Negeri 58, Ciracas, East Jakarta, intervened in the choice of students for the student council president candidate.

In the conversation, Tini Suharyati asked the students who are members of the WhatsApp Rohis 58 group not to choose candidates for Student Council Head of SMA Negeri 58 with serial numbers 1 and 2 because of their different beliefs. This information was made lever by the Twitter account @digeembokFC.
