Sudanese Immigrants Persecute Residents In Bintan, Threatened With 2 Years 8 Months In Prison

BINTAN - A Sudanese immigrant with the initials FE (35 years old) is facing a prison sentence of 2 years and 8 months for molesting a local man in Gunung Kijang District, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands (Kepri).

"The suspect FE was charged with violating Article 351 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code with a maximum penalty of two years and eight months in prison," said Head of the Bintan Police, AKBP Tidar W Dahono, as quoted by Antara, Friday, June 3. It started with a report on a case of abuse experienced by a victim with the initials NR (41) who works as a parking attendant, Friday (25/6).

At the beginning of the incident, he said, NR met with FE to collect parking fees/motorbike storage for four months amounting to Rp. 200,000. But at that time, FE was reluctant to pay the bill.

Furthermore, NR pushed FE's motorbike with the aim of not being left in the parking lot not far from the Bhadra Resort shelter.

"It turned out that this made the perpetrator emotional and immediately hit the victim in the face and back repeatedly, resulting in bruises," said Dahono.

After reporting the incident, the Gunung Kijang Police Criminal Investigation Unit immediately investigated and arrested the FE perpetrator. "The suspect has been detained for further legal proceedings," he said.

The Bintan Police also coordinated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) regarding the legal handling of FE.
