Condemns The Israeli Flag Parade And Attack On Al Aqsa, Indonesia Asks The UN To Take Immediate Steps

JAKARTA - Indonesia strongly condemns the Israeli flag march and attacks on the Al Aqsa area, east Jerusalem, which were carried out by irresponsible groups.

"This is a clear violation of the statu quo of what was agreed upon with Al Aqsa and thus a violation of international law," said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Teuku Faizasyah in an online press briefing, Antara, Thursday, June 2.

In response to this incident, Indonesia also calls on the United Nations Security Council to take steps to ensure that there is no escalation in the occupied territories, because it will create conditions that increase the sensitivity of inter-religious relations among the world community.

"Therefore, we remind every country to exercise restraint and not to escalate (the conflict) from now on," said Faizasyah.

Thousands of Israelis stage a controversial flag march in east Jerusalem on Sunday, May 29. The agenda is still carried out even though it could trigger a new chapter of tension with Palestinian Muslims.

Crowds waving Israeli flags departed from the Damascus Gate—the main entrance to Jerusalem's Old City Muslim Quarter—dancing and chanting 'the Israelites live' and 'death to the Arabs'.

Israeli police in riot gear blocked nearby roads and forcibly removed Palestinian protesters from the route.

A total of 79 Palestinians were injured in Jerusalem by rubber bullets, sound grenades and pepper spray. One protester was even shot with live fire.

"A total of 28 people were rushed to hospital after clashes with Israeli security forces and demonstrators," the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said

They added that as many as 163 Palestinians were also injured in the West Bank. At least 11 of the injured were caused by live bullets.
