JAKARTA - The authority of the Portuguese Directorate General of Health (DGS) confirmed 10 new cases of monkeypox on Wednesday, May 25.

The figure brings the total to 49 cases and equals the number of confirmed infections in neighboring Spain.

The two Iberian countries have been among the main centers of recent outbreaks of the normally mild virus outside of its endemic areas in parts of West and Central Africa.

DGS - reported by Reuters via Antara - said all confirmed cases had been found in men, most of whom were under 40 years old. All are in stable condition and none has been hospitalized.

Spain confirmed one additional case today. The Madrid region, where nearly all of the country's infections have been detected and most linked to adult saunas, will update the numbers on Wednesday.

Most of the infections detected globally so far in the outbreak have not been severe and many, but not all, have been reported in men who have sex with men. Symptoms include fever and a characteristic bumpy rash.
