BMKG Asks NTT Residents To Be Alert On 24-26 May 2022, What's Up?

KUPANG - The Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorology Station, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents to be aware of the potential for sea waves of up to 4 meters in a number of water points in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province for the next three days.

"Sea waves of the 2.5-4 meter high category have the opportunity to hit a number of waters in NTT during May 24-26 2022, so it is necessary to watch out for ships that want to sail," said Head of the BMKG Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station Syaeful Hadi in Kupang, Antara, Monday, May 23.

He said it was related to the weather forecast in the waters of NTT which was valid for three days (24-26 May). Syaeful mentioned a number of water points that are likely to be hit by high waves, namely the western part of the Sumba Strait, the Savu Sea, the southern waters of Kupang-Rote, and the southern Indian Ocean of Kupang-Rote.

Ocean waves with a potential height of up to 4 meters need to be watched out for because they pose a high risk to ferries, including fishing boats and barges.

Furthermore, he said there is one point of water that has the opportunity to be hit by very high waves (4-5 meters), namely in the southern Indian Ocean, Sumba-Sabu, which is at high risk for cargo ship shipping.

Meanwhile, the results of the analysis of synoptic conditions show that generally the wind blows from the Northeast to the Southeast at a speed of 2-5 on the Beaufort Scale.

His party appealed to fishermen and ship operators to avoid sea areas that have the opportunity to be hit by high waves for shipping safety.

"In addition, BMKG continues to monitor weather conditions in the waters to determine a safe and smooth sailing plan," said Syaeful Hadi.
