The Number Of Medical Faculties Will Be Added Next Year

JAKARTA - Minister Nadiem Makarim, will increase the capacity of the Faculty of Medicine by up to 20 percent in the next academic year.

"The demand for health workers continues to increase in accordance with the 2025 health projections. Therefore, steps are needed to accelerate the availability of health workers. The efficient step is to add a Faculty of Medicine that has proven effective," said Acting (Plt) Director-General of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), Nizam, in Jakarta, Thursday, May 19.

He explained that the capacity increase was based on studies, the number of lecturers, and the achievements of the Faculty of Medicine. From the results of the study, the capacity increase can be carried out from 11.000 to 15.000 per year.

This, he said, was in line with the target of the Ministry of Health. Medical faculties that are allowed to increase their capacity are those with A and B accreditations.

"It is also adjusted to the quality and capacity of the Faculty of Medicine," he said.

In addition, the Ministry of Education and Culture has also prepared four new medical faculties in a number of provinces that do not yet have one. The four medical faculties are located in West Sulawesi, Bangka Belitung, North Kalimantan, and the Riau Island.

“This is our effort to equalize the availability of doctors in Indonesia. At the same time, we conduct a moratorium on the opening of the Faculty of Medicine. Currently, many are queuing but in big cities, while the government wants the new Faculty of Medicine to be located in remote areas where doctors are desperately needed,” said Nizam.
