JAKARTA - Head of the IPB University Veterinary Professional Education Study Program, Sri Murtini, said disinfection of livestock cages infected with mouth and nail diseases.

"What is also important is cleaning and disinfection. So the former cage was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected," Sri Murtini said in a statement received in Jakarta, Sunday, May 15.

Sri added that humans can also be carriers of the virus and transmit diseases to other livestock.

"Remember that there are a lot of viruses in the saliva. So if the saliva sticks to the cage, the equipment can transmit it. Therefore, maintaining animal health is very important," he said.

He also reminded the importance of keeping healthy animals from moving to sick animals.

"One of them is biosecurity, aka restrictions on livestock traffic. It means that sick cattle or from sick areas should not leave the area," said Sri.

Sri said, another prevention is through the provision of vaccines in order to strengthen the body's immune system in animals.

Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture asked all regional heads in Indonesia to regulate livestock traffic as a joint effort to prevent FMD transmission from outbreak areas in East Java and Aceh Provinces.

Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo instructed optimal control so that no virus mutation occurs without direct control by both health workers and all relevant ranks in the province.

He ensured that the treatment of oral and nail diseases continued to be carried out optimally, namely by distributing drugs, injecting vitamins, giving antibiotics and strengthening immunity. On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture also continues to work on conducting research and laboratory tests to find vaccines for oral and nail diseases produced in the country.
