JAKARTA - The Jayawijaya Regency Government, Papua is obliged to enforce the local content of the Jayawijaya regional language to be applied in schools starting from the 2022/2023 Academic Year.

Jayawijaya Regent, Jhon Richard Banua in Wamena, Friday, May 13, said that the procurement of local textbooks in the Jayawijaya regional language was in progress so that in the near future it could be distributed to schools.

"From the results of our communication with education observers, it was felt that there was a need for a regional language, so today we are launching it to be implemented in the new school year. The local content of this regional language is very important for us in Jayawijaya," said Jhon as quoted by Antara.

The local content of the regional language which will later be applied to education units at the PAUD, SD and SMP levels will later be taught by indigenous Papuan children from Jayawijaya.

"Regarding the teaching staff, yesterday we hired quite a lot of teachers for local children, they can help the teaching and learning process later," he said.

Jhon does not know for sure the number of books and the details of the books that are currently being printed but have technically been prepared by the education office.

"Regarding education for local content, this regional language was prepared several years ago by coordinating with leaders so that the department already knows the technicalities," said Jhon Banua.

The government encourages the learning of regional languages in schools because a number of children, especially in the capital and suburban areas, no longer understand the mother tongue of this region.
