JAKARTA - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new weapons and equipment for Ukraine on Sunday, following a surprise visit to the capital Kyiv.
PM Trudeau, in a press conference following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, also said Canada imposed new sanctions on Russian individuals and entities in connection with Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
"Today, I'm announcing more military assistance, drone cameras, satellite imagery, small arms, ammunition and other support, including funding for mine operations," Trudeau said.
"And we introduced new sanctions against 40 Russian individuals and five entities, the oligarchs and the regime's close associates in the defense sector, all involved in Putin's war," he added, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Prime Minister Trudeau visited the city of Irpin outside Kyiv, a focal point of intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces, before Moscow withdrew its military in late March.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Trudeu also said that Canada had reopened its embassy in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
Canada is also providing $25 million to the United Nations World Food Programme, as part of efforts to enforce food security and will remove trade tariffs, on all Ukrainian imports to Canada for next year.
