JAKARTA - Former Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Roy Suryo believes that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) must support the Formula E event in Jakarta on June 4.

According to Roy, the electric car racing event is not just a speeding event. However, it can be in line with Indonesia's wishes regarding the development of the electric battery industry.

"Formula E is the race of the future, if the President does not support it now like Mandalika, it will be abandoned by the times," said Roy Suryo on his Twitter account, @KRMTRoySuryo2, Tuesday, April 26, evening.

Roy said that the Formula E event was related to President Jokowi's big dream to accelerate the battery industry. Jokowi had said that he wanted Indonesia to become a big battery producer in the world.

"Moreover, Indonesia has a dream to become a producing country (battery) for electric cars," said Roy.

On the previous occasion, Jokowi had revealed the reasons why he wanted to develop the battery industry in the country. The main reason is the abundance of raw materials such as nickel ore and other mineral raw materials.

As is known, President Jokowi has just inspected the Formula E Circuit. Not alone, Jokowi and DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan checked the readiness of the circuit in Ancol, North Jakarta on Monday, April 25.

During the check, Anies drove Jokowi using a golf cart. Jokowi also hopes that the electric car racing event will run smoothly in Jakarta.

This is the first time that Jokowi and Anies have jointly reviewed the preparations for Formula E. It is known that the Formula E event is often opposed by parties supporting the government who sit on the seats of the DKI DPRD.
