Construction Of 3 New Prisons In Nusakambangan Almost Complete

CILACAP - The construction project of three new prisons on Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap, Central Java, is almost complete.

"We have almost 100 percent of the buildings, we just need to procure the facilities and infrastructure," said I Putu Murdiana, Coordinator of the Correctional Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) throughout Nusakambangan and Cilacap.

But he admitted that he did not know the exact date when the three new prisons would operate. His party is still waiting for the organizational and work procedures (orta) at the Ministry of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform.

According to him, the three new prisons consist of the Nirbaya Prison, the Gladakan Narcotics Prison, and the Ngaseman Terrorist Special Prison.

"Hopefully the ortas will be dropped this year and will be put into operation soon because the leadership at the center also hopes that after the three new prisons are inaugurated, they can be used immediately," he explained.

According to him, this is because the three new prisons which are still under construction are equipped with high-tech equipment, so they must be used immediately so that the equipment does not get damaged.

His party has tried to anticipate the damage to the high-tech device by sending several prison officers to attend training on the operation of the equipment.

Nirbaya Prison applies minimum security with a capacity of 100 people. The Gladakan Narcotics Prison, which applies a maximum security capacity of 250 people, and the Ngaseman Terrorist Special Prison, which applies a maximum security capacity of 250 people.

"Currently, in Nusakambangan, there are eight prisons with a total capacity of 2.360 people and only 2,352 assisted residents based on data as of Wednesday (20/4) morning," he said.

The eight existing prisons in Nusakambangan currently consist of the Open Prison which applies a minimum security system, the Permisan Prison, and the Kembang Kuning Prison which applies medium security.

Then the Iron Prison and the Narcotics Prison, which apply maximum security, as well as Batu Lapas, White Sand Prisons, and Karanganyar Prisons which apply super-maximum security.
