The Proliferation Of Embungs Is Considered The Right Solution For Handling Floods

JAKARTA - Environmental experts from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) SupRYin said that the government needs to increase the number of reservoirs or water reservoirs that can be used to prevent flooding when the rainy season arrives.

"Embung is one of the solutions to reduce the risk of flooding. Therefore, many must be built in Bogor, Depok and surrounding areas," he said in Jakarta, Thursday, January 9.

The embung will be useful to collect rainwater which can then be flowed slowly when conditions begin to normalize. Thus, the risk of the impact of flooding can be minimized.

In general, Suprehin assessed that the presence of embungs in the Bogor and Depok areas was not so many and significant. So that when the rainy season arrives with high intensity it causes flooding.

"The DKI Jakarta and Bogor governments can work together to make the environment even better, one of which is to increase the number of reservoirs," he said.

In addition to the embung, the graduate of Environmental Process Engineering from Clausthal Technical University also suggested that the government and the community increase the planting of plants that can reforest and absorb water.

If the reservoir and planting of these plants are carried out, it is believed that the flood disaster that had hit the Jabodetabek area some time ago can be overcome before it occurs.

According to him, land conversion carried out by the government and the community is one of the causes of flooding. This is because the water no longer has a catchment place when the rainy season arrives.

"So initially it was agricultural land or gardens but later it was used as roads and buildings so that there was no more water infiltration into the ground," he said.

Therefore, all parties need to increase the planting of plants, especially in areas where the waterway leads to the river. "Basically all the plants can be used, depending on which one is suitable in the location or area of the waterway," he added.
