Regarding The Resolution To Suspend Russia's Membership At The UN Human Rights Council, This Is The Attitude Of The Indonesian Government

JAKARTA - Russia's membership in the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council is now under threat. On April 7 yesterday, there was a resolution adopted by the Special Emergency Session of the UN General Assembly regarding the suspension of Russia's membership in the UN Human Rights Council.

In a vote on the resolution, 93 countries voted in favor and 24 rejected it. Meanwhile, Indonesia was included in the 58 countries that chose to abstain.

The Indonesian government asked the United Nations to be careful and not to revoke the legal rights of its members before having all the facts.

"In the explanation of the vote, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, emphasized that those responsible for human rights violations in Ukraine must be held accountable and brought to justice," said a press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu), which was quoted from Between, Saturday April 9th.

Therefore, the Indonesian side believes that the Independent International Commission of Inquiry that has been established should be given the opportunity to work objectively and transparently and report its findings. In addition, the Human Rights Council in Geneva should also be given access to work in a transparent manner.

"The UN General Assembly needs to be careful, and not revoke the legal rights of its members before it has all the facts. The UN General Assembly must not create negative precedents that can undermine its credibility as a respectable body," continued the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Furthermore, Indonesia also urges all parties to stop violence and strive for peace through dialogue and diplomacy as much as possible.

"This is the only way that can stop the suffering and the increasing number of casualties in Ukraine. As well as to prevent the effects of this war from getting worse on a wider scale," the statement continued.
