Bringing Up The Case Of The Sinking Of The Ship In The Tanjung Api Waters, BP2MI Makassar: Don't Be Tempted By The Seduction Of Brokers

JAKARTA - Brokerage is an endless problem in the distribution of Indonesian migrant workers. Until now, many prospective Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) have become victims of brokers.

For this reason, the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) reminds prospective workers to be more careful. They were asked not to be tempted by the seductions of brokers who would ensnare them.

Head of UPT BP2MI Makassar, Agus Bustami, brought up the incident of the sinking of a ship carrying illegal workers in Tanjung Api Waters, Malacca Strait, Asahan Regency, North Sumatra Province on March 19, 2022. This could have been anticipated by avoiding middlemen.

Agus admitted, his party has routinely conducted socialization so that prospective workers choose to register officially and legally. Hopefully, PMI candidates can be more careful.

"We continue to tighten the socialization program because people prefer to persuade middlemen, because it is considered easier (the requirements)," he said, as quoted by Antara, Saturday, April 2.

He explained, to be registered legally and in accordance with the provisions, must meet various requirements. These include having to undergo a medical examination, residence documents, ID cards, family cards and appropriate birth certificates, must have information from the police and will be checked again at Immigration.

However, he said, the goal was for PMI candidates to be safe and avoid unwanted things. Call it getting harsh treatment from employers or their rights are not fulfilled, it is also easier to get protection.

"For the official route, it's a bit of a hassle (requirements), this is for the good of PMI if things happen that are not desirable in the future," he said.
